La Leche League Hong Kong is the local branch of La Leche League International, a nonprofit organisation which provides information, support and encouragement to mothers who wish to breastfeed. La Leche League has been helping mothers breastfeed for over 50 years and is recognised by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF as the leading authority on breastfeeding.
We believe that many women give up breastfeeding before they and their babies are ready, due to lack of support and information on how to overcome common problems such as sore nipples, poor latching, not enough milk or oversupply of milk. We aim to provide that support and information. Our monthly meetings, which are held at various locations in Hong Kong in both English and Chinese, are great places to learn the most up-to-date information about breastfeeding and get practical tips on breastfeeding technique, in a sociable environment. Individual help from trained LLL Leaders is available, both at the meetings and by telephone. Our leaders aim to help mothers at all stages of the breastfeeding relationship: from pregnancy... through breastfeeding a newborn...growth spurts… returning to work….starting solids… to weaning. Our leaders also have access to additional support services for specialist questions and problems. At La Leche League Hong Kong, we hope to provide a network of support that can help all mothers enjoy a pain-free and happy breastfeeding experience. |
La Leche League was founded to give information and encouragement, mainly through personal help, to all mothers who want to breastfeed their babies. While complementing the health care professionals, it recognizes the unique importance of one mother helping another to perceive the needs of her child and to learn the best means of fulfilling those needs.
LLL believes that breastfeeding, with its many important physical and psychological advantages, is best for both the baby and mother and is the ideal way to initiate good parent-child relationships. Breastfeeding though a natural process does not always come naturally. Most questions mothers have about breastfeeding are practical ones best answered by other nursing mothers. La Leche League Leaders are volunteers who have nursed their own babies, have undertaken a required training in breastfeeding management, communication and leadership skills and have satisfied La Leche League International that their views and attitudes to mothering are in accordance with La Leche League policy. La Leche League Leaders are not professionals but they are experts with not only their own experience to call on but also that of thousands of other breastfeeding mothers.
